What is Mini IVF?

Mini IVF or Minimal Stimulation IVF  takes a more natural approach to traditional IVF protocols. The role of our revolutionary Mini IVF is to produce high-quality eggs over a high quantity of eggs. A  successful pregnancy is all about finding that ONE good egg. The pregnancy success rates for Mini IVF are also comparable to those of Conventional IVF

Mini IVF Protocol:

The Mini IVF protocol aims to stimulate a woman’s body into producing between 6 and 8 quality eggs per cycle.

Rather than using large amounts of fertility medication to stimulate a woman’s ovulation, Mini IVF protocols limit the amount of medication used. With Mini IVF, a woman’s body is gently stimulated to produce a small number of high-quality eggs. Medication is limited to oral fertility drugs and minimal injections of fertility medication. The resulting eggs are retrieved surgically, fertilized with sperm in a laboratory setting – in vitro – and monitored for quality. The healthiest embryo is then transferred to the woman’s uterus for implantation. Surplus embryos may be cryopreserved and stored for use in a future Frozen Embryo Transfer (FET). Here are the steps in a nutshell:

  • A fertility medication regimen to produce 6 to 8 quality eggs
  • Cycle monitoring through ultrasound imaging and blood tests
  • Surgical egg retrieval
  • Fertilization of egg and sperm in vitro via (ICSI)
  • Culture and monitoring of embryo(s)
  • Grading and selection of quality embryo(s) for fresh transfer and/or future Frozen Embryo Transfer (FET)
  • Single Embryo Transfer (SET)

Mini IVF Medications:

Although medication regimens vary based on the patient’s medical needs, this gentle IVF protocol includes:

  • One Clomid pill consumed daily
  • Minimal injections of Menopur or Follistim/Gonal F
  • One trigger injection of Lupron is administered about two days before your egg retrieval.

Depending on the woman’s medical needs, an oral fertility medication — Clomid — is prescribed to gently stimulate her ovaries into producing multiple eggs. In some cases, fewer injections of Follistim/Gonal F or Menopur — may be prescribed in combination with Clomid to encourage egg production. Finally, Lupron is delivered 32-38 hours before surgical egg retrieval, depending on the hormone profile.

Candidates for Mini IVF:

Mini IVF the best treatment protocol for women over 40 years old and women who are diagnosed with the following:

  • Blocked or damaged fallopian tubes
  • Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)
  • Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome (OHSS)
  • Low ovarian reserve
  • Cancer or undergoing cancer treatment

Mini IVF has also become protocol for patients:

  • Who have failed multiple Conventional IVF cycles
  • Suffering from male-factor infertility
  • Wanting to reduce their costs of treatment
  • Wanting to reduce their risk of multiple pregnancies
  • Who don’t want to create excessive embryos due to religious reasons
  • Who want to reduce their use of injectable medications because of an aversion to needles
  • Want to undergo another IVF cycle immediately after a failed cycle

Mini IVF Pregnancy Success Rates:

Yearly data on Mini IVF success rates is a rich source of information for potential IVF patients. This data gives patients an idea of their average chances of pregnancy success through IVF.

At New Hope Fertility Center, Mini IVF success rates vary on the context of patient and treatment characteristics:

  • Age
  • Infertility diagnosis
  • History of previous pregnancies
  • History of previous miscarriages
  • Number of failed IVF cycles — fresh and frozen embryo transfers
  • Number of embryos transferred in a single cycle
  • IVF protocol recommended
  • Genetic testing to select only quality embryos for transfer — PGT-A, PGT-M
  • Gender selection

Reasons to Consider Mini IVF:

Mini IVF treatment provides several benefits, including:

  • Comfort – Due to the reduced amount of fertility medication, there are fewer side effects during the cycle. Less physical discomfort results in reduced stress during the cycle.
  • Egg Quality – The focus in Mini IVF is on the quality rather than the number of eggs retrieved. This approach helps to prevent harvesting a large number of eggs that are not suited for fertilization.
  • Cycle Success – The success rate for Mini IVF rivals that of traditional IVF care.
  • Treatment Options – Mini IVF provides treatment options to women who may otherwise have been unable to pursue IVF as a treatment because the focus was on quantity rather than quality.
