In vitro fertilization (IVF) is seen as a successful method of treating both male and female infertility. Historically, IVF treatment has required large doses of fertility medication in order to stimulate a women’s ovaries to respond appropriately to treatment. At New Hope, we have found that newer protocols, like Eco IVF, can achieve similar success rates while using smaller doses of fertility medication in conjunction with a female’s natural hormone cycle.

What is an Eco IVF?

Eco IVF is an IVF protocol that uses low doses of medication that is customized based on your medical needs. Treatment begins with a medical examination and a review of your medical history to fully understand your unique care needs. Using this information, we are able to prescribe an Eco IVF protocol that is uniquely yours.

What happens during the Eco protocol?

During an Eco cycle:

  • You are closely monitored by blood work and ultrasound on an ongoing basis to evaluate your body’s response to the medication and to chart your progression.
  • You will be given low doses of oral fertility medication to gently stimulate your ovaries to produce multiple eggs. Depending on the results of your tests, you may receive up to 3 doses of injectable medication as well.
  • Through monitoring, we wait for your eggs to reach the desired maturation. The goal of Eco IVF is to produce between three and five high-quality eggs that are ready and healthy enough to be fertilized.
  • Once mature, you will be given medication via nasal spray to allow us to time your ovulation and egg retrieval. The eggs will be retrieved immediately prior to ovulation.

The retrieved eggs are fertilized in our lab using either your partner’s sperm or donor sperm. The embryos are then monitored closely so that we can select the highest quality embryo to transfer back into your uterus – surplus embryos can be frozen for a future cycle. We tend to suggest that our patients do a single embryo transfer for this form of IVF. Research shows that transferring multiple embryos does not increase the chance of becoming pregnant. However, it significantly increases the likelihood of a multiple pregnancy, which poses health risks for both mother and child.
