Fertility support options for male couples:

Intrauterine Insemination Using Donor Sperm

The most common fertility treatment for lesbian couples is IUI – also referred to as artificial insemination. This is the simple procedure of inserting a highly concentrated amount of motile donor sperm into one of the female partner’s cervix timed with ovulation. IUI is performed in the doctor’s office and requires no anesthesia – it is similar to a Pap smear procedure.

IUI Procedure

After her monthly cycle has been regulated, the patient is administered an oral medication (typically, Clomid or Femara) to stimulate the growth of multiple egg follicles. The ovulation of multiple eggs timed with insemination of sperm increases her chances of pregnancy.

  • The development of the patient’s egg follicles are monitored throughout her cycle with blood level hormone measurements and pelvic ultrasounds
  • The doctor determines the prime time to induce ovulation via hCG injection administration
  • The donor frozen semen specimen is washed and prepared for insertion into the woman’s uterus using an insemination catheter – similar to a Pap smear
  • The preparation and insertion of the sperm assures that a highly concentrated amount of motile and active sperm are inserted directly into the patient’s uterus
  • The patient self-administers vaginal suppositories of Progesterone to thicken her uterine lining in preparation for embryo implantation
  • Usually 2 IUI inseminations are performed after the hCG ovulation release injection – between 12 and 36 hours after administration – to increase the chance of conception
  • A pregnancy test is scheduled

In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) Using Donor Sperm

New Hope Fertility NYC recommends IVF when the eggs from one partner are being harvested for fertilization using donor sperm and the other partner is carrying the pregnancy. There are a variety of IVF protocols that can be used.

Conventional IVF – high dosages of fertility drugs are administered to produce 15+ eggs

Mini-IVF – a minimal amount of fertility medication is administered to produce a few quality eggs

Natural IVF – no fertility drugs are administered and the woman produces her natural monthly egg

IVF Procedure

  • After her cycle is regulated to coincide with the carrier partner’s cycle, the female partner producing the eggs will be administered fertility medication
  • The development of the patient’s egg follicles are monitored with blood level hormone measurements and pelvic ultrasounds
  • The doctor determines the prime time to induce ovulation via hCG injection administration
  • The patient’s eggs are surgically retrieved by the doctor using a transvaginal ultrasound-guided aspiration tool
  • The patient’s eggs are then fertilized with donor sperm in a controlled laboratory using a technique known as ICSI – a single sperm injected directly into one egg
  • All resulting embryos culturing in vitro are continuously monitored until they reach an optimum stage of development
  • One or more high grade embryo(s) are then transferred to the carrier partner’s uterus via an insemination catheter – similar to a Pap smear
  • The carrier partner self-administers vaginal suppositories of Progesterone to thicken the lining of her uterus in preparation for embryo implantation
  • A pregnancy test is scheduled

Gestational Surrogacy Using Donor Eggs

New Hope Fertility NYC works with recognized surrogacy agencies like New Beginnings Surrogacy for helping same sex male couples achieve their dream of having a family. Working in concert with these gestation surrogacy experts, we will help you find a suitable egg donor.

You will then be matched with an optimum gestational surrogate mother and handle all legal aspects of the process.

Through an IVF procedure, the gestational surrogate mother is then impregnated with an embryo produced from the donor egg and one of the intended father’s sperm. She then carries the baby to full term and the two intended father’s take over full legal rights after birth.
