Male Fertility:

New Hope has helped many individuals/couples who have been diagnosed with male factor infertility. Each couple/individual we see is carefully evaluated to determine the specific cause of their infertility. If your physician determines that it is due to a malefactor, there are several courses of fertility treatment that may be pursued.

Infertility does not discriminate between females and males. About 40% of couples seeking infertility treatment are suffering from male-factor infertility.

A man’s sperm quality is critical. Whether or not a man’s sperm quality is in normal ranges depends on:

  • Morphology – sperm shape
  • Motility – sperm movement
  • Semen volume – sperm count
  • Forward progression

A man’s fertility describes his ability to produce quality sperm in quantities able to fertilize an egg. Many things can cause infertility in men, including:

  • Genetic issues
  • Alcohol or drug use
  • Treatment for cancer
  • Chronic diseases, such as diabetes
  • Injury to the male reproductive organs
  • Untreated sexually transmitted diseases
  • Abnormalities in the male reproductive organs
  • Illness experienced as a child with a high temperature

Tips to Increase Male Fertility:

You can increase male fertility simply by adopting a healthy lifestyle. The following tips may also help:

  • Exercise and be active regularly
    • Exercise will increase your testosterone level and improve your sexual performance.
  • Avoid taking on more stress
    • Prolonged stress can raise cortisol levels and may decrease your testosterone levels. Too much stress also reduces your sexual desire, performance, and satisfaction.
  • Vitamin C Supplementation
    • Antioxidants are known to counter the harmful effects of oxidative stress. Studies have shown that Vitamin C improves sperm count and motility.
  • Vitamin D Supplementation
    • Men deficient in Vitamin D are found to have lower testosterone levels. Vitamin D may also increase sperm motility.

Semen Analysis:

A  semen analysis is a simple, yet sophisticated diagnostic test used to judge a man’s sperm quality and quantity.

  • Sperm Concentration is the number of sperm in the ejaculate.
  • Sperm Motility is the percentage of sperm moving and the qualities of movement, such as speed and straightness.
  • Sperm Morphology is the percentage of sperm having a normal appearance in size and shape.

How to Treat Male Infertility:

The first step to treating male fertility issues is a semen analysis. A semen analysis requires the male to produce a semen sample for evaluation. Fertility experts will then evaluate the sample and determine a course of action. Common procedures to address male infertility include:

  • Varicocele Repair
    • Varicocele os bulging veins above the testicles. Surgery may be performed to address this issue and to eliminate its effect on fertility.
  • Hormone Therapy
    • When hormonal imbalance is a concern, medication may be prescribed to bring hormone levels back into the normal range.
  • Vans Deferens Repair
    • When the vans deferens are blocked or not present, structures may be able to be created or repaired to increase fertility.
  • Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI)
    • A procedure where a single sperm is inserted directly into an egg that is ready for fertilization. This procedure may be used when sperm do not have the motility required to fertilize an egg.
  • Sperm Collection
    • If sperm are being produced, they may be retrieved directly through the testicles via a needle. The retrieved sperm may then be used in fertility treatments such as IVF.
