It has been said that, in this age of the internet and social media, news, including fake news, travels faster than the virus. Novel coronavirus (SARS-COV-2) is a new strain of coronavirus causing COVID-19. Currently, there is only one case of possible transmission from mother to baby antenatally (before birth) or intrapartum (during birth) reported in the literature. According to experts, the fetus is unlikely to be exposed during pregnancy.
A study was done testing amniotic fluid, cord blood, neonatal throat swabs and breastmilk samples from COVID-19 infected mothers and all samples tested negative for the virus. There is also only one reported case of a woman with COVID-19 who required mechanical ventilation at 30 weeks’ gestation. She underwent a successful c-section and made a good recovery. There is no evidence to suggest an increased risk of miscarriage or early pregnancy loss associated with COVID-19. There is also no evidence that there will be any congenital effects of the virus on fetal development.
