PGT-A: Preimplantation Genetic Testing for Aneuploidy – AKA Genetic Chromosome Testing

PGT-A, formally known as PGS, is the testing of an embryo’s chromosomal makeup before being transferred to a patient’s uterus. This testing is only available while undergoing IVF (in-vitro fertilization).

Understanding the chromosomal composition of an embryo helps your clinical team determine the chances of success for a transfer, as well as any risks such as miscarriage and/or chromosomal disorders.

Who should consider this form of testing?

  • Women over age 35
  • Those at risk of having a child with chromosomal abnormalities – Women over 35
  • Have a history of recurrent miscarriage
  • Have a history of unsuccessful IVF cycles despite high-quality embryos
  • Have a known chromosomal defect

Possible PGT-A Results and what they mean:

You may have heard the terms euploid, mosaic, and aneuploid when learning about your embryo genetic testing options. These terms refer to the chromosomal makeup of the cells in the embryo sample.

Euploid – Chromosomally normal embryos with 46 chromosomes in 23 pairs. Most likely to result in a live birth.

Aneuploid – Embryos that don’t have the correct number of chromosomes can lead to increased rates of miscarriages, birth defects, and IVF failure. Least likely to result in a live birth.

Mosaic – Mosaic embryos, which comprise about 20% of embryos, have both normal and abnormal cells. Older women who use their eggs might have a higher percentage of them. It may result in a live birth, but less common.

How is PGT-A Tested?

PGT-A is available to all patients undergoing IVF, regardless of age or other factors.  A biopsy sample is taken from the outer layer of the embryo when it reaches the blastocyst stage and it is then frozen to await results, which take 1-2 weeks. There is an extra cost associated with this testing.

It is important to note that this testing is different than PGT-M
